How valuable are you as a leader?

Ultimately as leaders, we should be trying to find a way to add more value than anyone else does within our schools. We simply need to be that person that does more for others. However, we must work harder on ourselves than anything else. Why? because when we become more intelligent, more confident, more effective, we can add more value to other peoples lives.

Here are 10 tips to help you become a more successful leader.

Have the Right Vision. This means having your own vision. We all have a great need for acceptance in this world but we must trust that our vision and beliefs are our own and unique. Leadership is about giving a new perspective to things. You need to determine where you want to be and what you want to achieve. People buy into why you are doing it, not what you want to achieve.

Develop Positive Relationships. According to research, our relationship with others is our best guarantee to improving focus and concentration, as well as lowering our stress levels. When you genuinely connect with other people, the pleasure-inducing hormone is released into your bloodstream, helping to improve focus and reduce anxiety. Share a positive emotion with others like being kind, showing interest and having gratitude.

Be Committed. If you expect your team to be productive and work hard, you have to lead by example. Prove your commitment to your role, department, and school. It will not only earn their respect but also instill similar levels of energy among the team.

Maintain a Positive Attitude. Having a happy and positive leader means satisfied and happy staff. If you want to keep the team motivated towards your vision, keep their energy levels up.

Effective Communication is Crucial. Whether it’s in the staffroom or in life, effective communication is critical. Successful leaders make sure that they are understood and heard, and they also know how to listen. Never underestimate the power of listening, we can’t learn anything new if we are talking.

Always be Confident. No matter what level of leadership you are at, there will be days when things don’t go the way you want them to go. Successful leaders are confident, not only in themselves but also in their staff. They stay calm, focused and confident.

Be Organised. To work more productively and effectively, you will have to be organised. The secret is to learn how to prioritise early on in your leadership.

Know your own, and your Team’s Strengths and Weaknesses. Successful leaders know the areas that need improvement in themselves and within their department while building upon their strengths.

Fair and Just. If you want to gain the respect and trust of your team, you have to be fair and just. You will make a lot of judgments in leadership, and it is crucial to have an open, clear mind to make an impartial decision.

Don’t Stop Improving. No matter how great you are as a leader, there are many things you still need to learn. Be open to learning. The most successful leaders don’t claim that they know everything. Instead, they constantly learn and always try to improve themselves. Keep your mind focused on possibilities and new ideas for greater success.
